More than you were expecting, less than you would call fluent. He opens his mouth and sings like a canary かなり, and you quietly adjust upwards: かなり.
Stronger than ちょっと, softer than とても. It carries a small note of surprise. なかなか is better than expected, and むしろ is rather as in on the contrary.
