to give (receiver is in the speaker's group)
The opposite direction to あげる: this one arrives. Someone presses the cure into your hand, ooh. くれる is giving that comes to you.
Direction is the whole distinction: あげる goes out, くれる comes in. 与える あたえる is the formal give, the one that takes abstract objects.
