ついに
at last, finally
Four attempts and three years, and the letter has finally come. The same つい as つい, except that nothing about this one was accidental. The end of a long road rather than a short one: ついに.
やっと and ようやく do the same job. ついに leans on the length of what came before, and it works for bad endings too. At last is not at least: せめて and 少なくとも are at least.
