You believe them and then you lean on them, which is the two halves of it. The same rely らい as 依頼, with a shin しん put behind it. Both ways, or it does not work: しんらい.

Worth knowing

信用 しんよう is trusting what somebody says or does. 信頼 is trusting the person, and it is the warmer word.
