とう
to ask, to inquire
A mouth in the gateway putting the question formally. Toe とう in the door, and this one is not asking anybody’s age: とう.
聞く きく asks in the ordinary way and 尋ねる たずねる goes looking for the answer. 問う is formal, often written, and often negative: 年齢は問わない.
