ち
ground, place
The earth underneath everything, and the particular patch of it where a man spent the whole rest of his life. The same ち as blood, which is what went into it: ち.
Same reading as 血 ち, blood. 地 has 土 earth in it, which is the entire difference. ところ and 場所 ばしょ are the everyday words for a place, and 場 ば leans towards the occasion.
