Mnemonic

The shoulders swing round and the face follows. The same ふり as 振り返る and the same moo むく as 向く, and she was smiling by the time it got there: ふりむく.

Worth knowing

振り返る ふりかえる is the same movement and also does looking back on the past. 振り向く stays physical.
