The sun crossing the temple wall was the only clock anybody had. The monk nudges the dial round with his toe とき: that moment, and no other one: とき.

Worth knowing

Same kanji as 時 じ 'o'clock'. とき is time in general and the 'when' of a sentence, じ only counts hours.
