Once the channel is cut the water never runs any other way again. The same kettle けっ as 決意, boiled dry. This is what you put in front of a promise you are not going to break: けっして.

Worth knowing

Takes a negative later in the sentence: 決して忘れない, never forget. On its own it is only half a thought.
