おえる
to end, to finish
The thread runs out at the end of winter and you are the one holding the scissors. Oh お, ee える, homework done at your own hand at last: おえる.
終わる is the thing stopping by itself, 終える is you stopping it. Homework 終わる when the clock runs out and 終える when you finish it. 終わり おわり is the noun, the end itself.
