You are already past the turning and nobody stopped. Sue すぎ, ru る, and the whole afternoon went by exactly the same way: すぎる.
Hung on the end of another word it means too much of it: 高過ぎる is too expensive. 過ごす すごす is you spending the time rather than it passing you.
