ちがい
difference, mistake
Two sets of feet going opposite ways round the same thing, and the gap left between them is the word. The same guy がい as 間違い, and these two are nowhere near each other: ちがい.
間違い まちがい is a mistake, a difference from what is right. 違い is a difference between two things, and 差 さ is the measurable gap.
