Mnemonic

Down you go on the step and your knee finds the edge of it. The same うつ as 撃つ firing, except that this one needs no gun: contact with the whole of your weight behind it: うつ.

Worth knowing

当てる あてる is hitting a target you aimed at, 叩く たたく is knocking or tapping, 打つ is a solid blow.
