Mnemonic

The whole weight of the thing comes down at once and from a distance away. The same うつ as 打つ hitting, except that this one does it from across the room: he was hit with a handgun: うつ.

Worth knowing

Same reading as 打つ うつ, striking a thing with your own hand. 撃つ is firing a weapon, and 放つ はなつ is letting the shot go. 火 ひ is the other fire, the noun.
