Mnemonic

A person and a hand, the same press as 付ける except that nobody pressed. You crossed the yard and the mud came with you, and it took つく the whole walk home to notice: つく.

Worth knowing

付ける つける is you attaching it, 付く is it attaching itself. Three つく to keep apart: this one, つく for a light coming on, and 着く for arriving.
